  • UK taking a tough stand against India as they suspect Scot has almost certainly been tortured – Theresa May statement to the BBC on Monday, FCO Minister telling Parliament yesterday they will take ‘extreme action’
  • British High Commission in Delhi has demanded private access to Jagtar Singh Johal for Thursday 23 November and confirmed representatives will be in court on Friday 24 November
  • After private or supervised access to Jagtar on Thursday Britain is expected to request an independent medical assessment and to be present when it takes place
  • Minsters furious after being advised Indian police are feeding false information to media e.g. claiming they informed the British High Commission of Jagtar Singh Johal’s arrest (untrue), compromising consular staff meeting Jagtar by sharing names with the media, misrepresenting the British Deputy High Commissioner in Chandigarh
  • Foreign Office accept trial by media and statements by the Chief Minister and Director General of Police means Scot has no chance of a fair trial if he is charged
  • Sources suggest Jagtar was wrong person in the wrong place and is innocent, India therefore looking to limit further damage to its global image and relations with Britain/Canada
  • If Jagtar may have been involved in any unlawful activities on British soil it has been suggested Indian authorities share any evidence and return him to the UK where the matter can be properly investigated by British law enforcement agencies.
