SURREY – A rising young Indo-Canadian boxer from Surrey has been named to Canada’s 2018 Commonwealth Games team and will compete at the upcoming games being held in Australia.
Eric Basran, 19 was one of seven boxers chosen to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games, capping an incredible year for the young boxer, who has won multiple bouts and made a strong impression on both the national and international stage.
In April, he was crowned national champion in the elite-men 56 kg category, after beating Kevin Chauvette and Thomas Bloomenfeld during the national championships in Quebec City.
Basran, who fights in the elite men’s 56-kg category, competed in his first international fight in May, beating a Cuban boxer in a unanimous decision.
He kept his international record perfect in September when he won another fight by unanimous decision against a Mexican boxer.
Basran was awarded “Best Bout” for his performance against the Mexican, along with a $1,000 bursary earmarked for personal and professional development. The bursary is awarded in honour of former Boxing Canada President John O’Shea.
Basran, who also won gold at the 2017 Oregon Golden Gloves boxing tournament, is expected to well and put his new-found international success to the test in what would be the biggest boxing event of his young career.
Canada has traditionally performed well at the Commonwealth Games. During 2014 in Glasgow, three Canadians brought home medals in boxing.
Basran will be a part of the team that looks to match or better that total when the Canadian team travels to Gold Coast, Australia in April 4-15, 2018.
Along with Basran, Boxing Canada nominate six other boxers who will represent Canada as they step into the ring at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. The dynamic group composed of three men and four women will set their sight on the podium come April.
The draw will be known on April 4th and the boxing tournament will be held over ten days of competition from April 5-14 at Oxenford Studios, film studio and home to Hollywood blockbusters. The Canadian boxing delegation will field a stellar roster which combines veteran leadership and youthful pugilists. In addition, it will be the first multi-sports Games environment for five boxers on
Historically, Boxing Canada has performed very well at the Commonwealth Games. At Glasgow 2014, the Canadian delegation claimed three medals with Samir El Mais (81Kg – gold), Ariane Fortin (75Kg – silver) and Mandy Bujold (51Kg – bronze).

The entire Canadian Team will be officially announced by Commonwealth Games Canada in March 2018.
The 2018 Games will take place April 4-15, 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia, with 70 participating countries and over 4000 athletes taking part.
