Sikh-American Gynaecologist Voted In As OB/GYN Department Chief

RENTON – Dr Preetkamal Cheema, a board certified surgeon at the UW Medicine Valley Medical Center in Renton, Washington has been voted in as OB/GYN Department Chief. This hospital has been voted as ‘Top 10 Places to Give Birth in the USA’ by the Fit Pregnancy magazine. The hospital is designated as a ‘Baby Friendly Birthing Center’, which is the gold standard for accreditation in Women’s and Children’s healthcare. She is the youngest physician in the hospital’s history to receive this honour.

Dr. Cheema is a graduate of Central Washington University, located in her hometown; she was awarded a four year full academic scholarship and was the recipient of the CWU College of Sciences Excellence in Academics and Leadership Award. She received her medical degree from the prestigious University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle Washington where she organized and taught a course which united graduate and professional students in the health sciences to become aware of issues faced by under-served populations to healthcare.  She completed her residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas Nevada, she was chosen as the Chief Resident. During her training she was awarded the Special Resident in Minimally Invasive Gynaecology Award presented by the American Association of Gynaecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL).

She has given several oral, video, and poster presentations at national conferences.  She is a member of the American Association of Gynaecologic Laparoscopists, American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. She is certified in the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery Program which is endorsed by the American College of Surgeons and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

She began her medical journey by volunteering at a charity hospital in Patiala Punjab.  She is the daughter of prominent writer and thinker Dr Sawraj Singh.
