CALGARY – Murder charges against a 16-year-old girl from southern Alberta have been upgraded to first-degree murder alongside her boyfriend in connection with the death of a South Asian man from Calgary whose remains were discovered near a burning car last October.

Fazal Rehman’s body was found at the scene of a burning vehicle in a rural area south of the village of Morrin, near Drumheller.

Rehman, 36, was also known by the name Afzad Rehman.

The girl was originally charged with accessory after the fact to murder and obstruction of justice. Prosecutor Mac Vomberg appeared in youth court to upgrade the charge Monday morning.

“After a detailed and thorough review of the evidence, it was determined that there is a reasonable likelihood of conviction on a charge of first-degree murder,” said Vomberg.

The teen can’t be identified in order to comply with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Her boyfriend, Dylan Howard, 21, is also charged with first-degree murder. Both face charges of obstruction of justice as well.

Howard was denied bail and will be back in court in Drumheller for a preliminary inquiry in January.

The teen’s defence lawyer, Andrea Urquhart, booked a bail hearing for her client on Monday. She will argue for the girl’s release next month.
