DO NOT JUDGE OTHERS: Am I As Bad As They Are

“Just Sit Silently – Enjoy The Silence,” Said The Master!

By Ashok Bhargava

A great master was sitting on the seashore, on the beach, and a man who was seeking for truth came to him, touched his feet and asked, “If I am not disturbing you, I would like to do anything you suggest which can help me to find the truth.”

The master simply closed his eyes and remained silent. The man shook his head. He said in his own mind, “This man seems to be crazy. I am asking him a question and he is closing his eyes.” He shook the man and said, “What about my question?”

The master said, “I answered it. Just sit silently… don’t do anything, and the grass grows by itself. You need not bother about it — everything will happen. You just sit silently, enjoy silence.”

The man said, “Can you give it a name — because people will be asking me, “What are you doing?”

So he wrote on the sand with his finger: Do not judge others.

The man said, “This is too short an answer. Be a little more elaborate.”

The master wrote in big letters: DO NOT JUDGE OTHERS.

The man said, “But these are simply big letters. You are writing the same thing.”

The old master said, “If I say more than that, then it will be wrong. If you can understand, then just do what I have told you and you will know.”

So, the moral of this story is that every day we take time to look into our actions rather than passing judgement on others actions. It should not embarrass us to admit that we are not saints but fallible imperfect human beings. Somehow, we begin to think we are going to be around forever and start accumulating material wealth as if it will accompany us when we depart from the earth. We become judge of others actionsjudge others without realizing that we are just as bad as them.

Regularly going to temple doesn’t insulate us from our bad habits of jealously, backbiting, backstabbing, stealing orthe failures, shortcomings, mistakes, rudeness and other downsides of being human.

In order to become better person, we must stop complaining and pray, stop criticizing others and forgive others for their mistakes.  Be kind, grateful and understanding.

Here is a poem I will like  to share my poem with you:

Unspoken

“Some words are never meant to be spoken.”

I wake up in my body and

it wasn’t that body anymore.

There are days I give up on my body.

I think the life I want was the life

I have had.

I want to be the water clinging to your roots.

With both hands in the soil

I feel modesty of a new beginning

splendour of a tiny sprout

kneeling to the glory of God.

I hold it and wander

into the surge of forever

the unbroken time of infinity.
