OBITUARY – Shavilla Singh

It’s with profound sadness and deep sorrow to announce the passing away of Shavilla Singh at (VGH) in Vancouver, Canada on May 17th.

Shavilla was a legendry radio personality and was much loved, admired and highly respected as a broadcaster in Fiji and Vancouver.

Shavilla was one of pioneers of Hindustani radio program in Fiji having joined FBC soon after its opening in 1956. She continued with FBC till 1987 when she immigrated to Vancouver when she joined Radio RimJhim and became equally popular as in Fiji. The “Shakti Society” Vancouver bestowed on her the honour of a Lifetime Achievement award,  in honouring her excellence, brilliance and contributions as a popular radio host two years ago,”. Shakti” awards are presented to women for showing Courage, Determination and Grace in various fields.

Shavilla had the distinction of being the first person in Fiji to self-learn to type in Devnagri script on a Hindi typewriter and took direct dictation on the typewriter. A rare skill indeed.

She will be surely missed and fondly remembered for her humble and charming personality.

Funeral services for Shavilla Singh were held at RIVERSIDE FUNERAL HOME ,  at # 7410 Hopcott Road, Delta, on  MAY 23rd,2019 (THURSDAY)…starting at 9am.
