Students from Surrey’s Princess Margaret are headed to NASA soon. The students have worked from November 2018-June 2019, spending between 10-15 hours per week –outside of class time-doing researching and applying scientific and engineering principles in designing their settlement. After submitting a 40 page proposal, their school’s NASA team has been invited to participate in the competition finals, taking place at the Kennedy Space Center’s NASA Campus in Titusville, Florida at the end of July. Princess Margaret will be representing Canada as one of the few schools in Canada to ever attend the competition and will be competing against schools from all over the world. The team consists of Grade 10 & 11 students who participated in an International Space Settlement Design Competition, sponsored by NASA & other major aerospace companies in North America. The students are challenged with the task of designing a completely realistic, fully functional city in space for thousands of people. This space settlement must take in to consideration the housing, health educational, recreational, nutritional, technological, and employment needs of the population. Their design is further challenged by the numerous restrictions and requirements set forth by the competition organizers. Check out examples of our Princess Margaret’s Secondary School’s work at: https://spaceset.org/?page=samples. Unfortunately the competition does not offer any assistance in terms of subsidizing the costs for the students to travel to Titusville, Florida. The students are responsible for raising their own money to cover the costs for transportation and accommodation. They are now in the process of raising funds and would like to ask for your help in sending these outstanding students to Florida, as this may be the last year for our school to host a team like this. The sponsors or donors who are willing to help will be recognized in school assemblies and in media outlets. Any amount is appreciated and we will accept money in the form of cash or cheque written to Princess Margaret Secondary School. If requested, a tax receipt can be issued (given that charitable donation requirements are met). For more information on how you can help, please contact Pam at: [email protected]
