VANCOUVER – BC Liberals said following years of broken promises, John Horgan and the NDP’s ride-hailing roll-out continues to stumble, with only one company in the province approved to operate, which is already struggling to launch under the NDP government’s burdensome regulations.

“John Horgan and the NDP promised ride-hailing by Christmas 2017, then 2018, and finally Christmas 2019. Here we are in 2020 with just one small ride-hailing company approved in the entire province, and they’re already struggling to find drivers due to burdensome NDP regulations,” said Jas Johal, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough. “Ride-hailing manages to work all around the world, from Toronto to Mexico City, yet here we are in B.C. stuck with a scheme concocted by John Horgan and the NDP that has failed to function on all levels.”

As of January 2020, Whistle Ride run by Green Coast Ventures in Tofino and Whistler is the only ride-hailing company approved to operate in British Columbia. That company has only been able to hire six drivers thanks to the onerous class 4 drivers licence requirements imposed by the NDP government.

“This is not what people were promised or expecting. The BC Liberals tabled a framework that would have seen ride-hailing operating throughout the province before the end of 2017,” concluded Johal. “Instead, we’ve now experienced the third holiday season under the NDP government with British Columbians stuck out in the cold waiting for rides home and no ride-hailing in sight. British Columbians deserve better than John Horgan’s repeated broken promises.”
