Accused Killer Of Taxi Driver Pleads Not Guilty

NAUSORI – A man charged with the murder of a taxidriver in Nausori last week pleaded not guilty to all charges against him in a special sitting of the Magistrates Court in Suva yesterday.

Devendra Naicker, 30, of Korociriciri, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, one count of unlawful use of motor vehicle and one count of driving a motor vehicle without a licence.

However, the police prosecution for the case requested the court to keep Mr Naicker in remand because there was still tension in the community.

The prosecution told magistrate Usaia Ratuvili that Naicker and the deceased were from the same community.

The prosecution also said other factors like the serious nature of the case and the fact that the first charge was an indictable one needed to be considered when considering bail.

In response Naicker said he could arrange for someone to stay with if he was given bail.

Citing reasons given by the prosecution, the court ordered Mr Naicker to be remanded in custody for 14 days before recalling the case.

When asked by Ratuvili whether he would seek legal representation for the case, Mr Naicker said he wished to apply for legal aid.

Naicker is charged with the death of taxi driver Vishal Mishra whose body was found in Manoca last week. Mishra’s body was found at the Irrigation Road in Lakena, Nausori with visible wounds to his neck and chest.

The case will be called in the Magistrate’s Court in Nausori on January 9 next year.
