ROPAR – Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had committed a contempt of court by supporting IGP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police that was probing police action on people protesting over the alleged desecration of Guru Granth Sahib in which two persons were killed. The High Court had last week quashed the SIT inquiry with directions to the government to form a new SIT without him.

Capt Amarinder has, however, refused to accept the resignation letter of the IPS officer, seeking premature retirement from service. The CM said the government would challenge the HC orders as he was a highly competent and efficient officer, whose services were needed in the border state.

Cheema, while addressing mediapersons, said it was everybody’s right to challenge the HC’s orders in the apex court. In this case, however, supporting the police officer publicly, the Chief Minister attempted to tarnish the dignity of judiciary, he alleged.

“It is the job of an investigating officer to present the facts before the court and the decision of the court is supreme. The court can accept or reject these facts. If he resigns out of resentment, then what is the use of the courts?” he asked.
