Bhullar Headed To World Wrestling Championships in Turkey Next Week!
SURREY – Arjan Singh Bhullar, the Commonwealth Gold Medalist and Canadian national champion who will be competing in the World Wrestling Championships next week in Turkey, was honored for his success at the National Championship where he won his 5th straight title this year as well as the Commonwealth Games Gold medal by the organizers of the Surrey Guru Nanak Sikh Temple sports tournament.
Along with Bhullar was his wrestling rival, training partner, and very good friend Sunny S. Dhinsa, who became the first ever 18 year old to bring back a Gold medal for Canada from the Commonwealth Championships this year. He also won the Junior and Senior National titles in his category. Both wrestlers were applauded for their success and presented with trophies of honor.
However, this success did not come easy. Many in our community waited for the day when one of our athletes would get to the national or perhaps even the Olympic level. A few years ago the idea seemed laughable when Shiri Pehalwan made a speech at one of the tournaments and stated that “the day will come when one of our boys will win the Canadian Championship and one day will go to the Olympics”.
This past weekend he repeated that same emotional speech. This time the speech was not laughable nor a dream anymore. This time it was a reality which has now been repeated several times. Not only do we have Champions at the National level but also the International level. Who would have thought 10-15 years ago that Arjan S. Bhullar would be competing in the World Championships or going to the Olympics? Who foresaw Sunny S. Dhinsa winning an International tournament? With commitment from people like Avtar S. Bhullar, Shiri Pehalwan, Boota S. Dhinsa, Ravi Sodi, Satnam S. Johal, and Nazir Lal to just name a few the youngsters from our community have excelled to unimaginable heights.
This trend will only get better and stronger when role models like Arjan S. Bhullar and the late Ravi S. Sodi have set a standard in their sport. Once the barrier is broken its easier for others to follow. No doubt there are other champions in the making.
Shortly after the presentations the Heavyweight Wrestling competition took place in which Sunny S. Dhinsa won the title thus becoming the “Canadian Kesari” for the 2011.
The Kabaddi competition followed and provided the final excitement. Azad Kabaddi Club beat Punjab KC 34-26 in the first semi-final and Vancouver KC beat Young Club 35-31 in their semi-final. The final match was a tie at half time between Azad and Vancouver 23-23. Every point gained was like a basket scored in a basketball game. The game went back and forth. However, Vancouver started pulling ahead point by point in the 2nd half and the game ended with a 42-31 victory for Vancouver KC.
