Babbar Khalsa Man Acquitted In 24-Year-Old Firing Case

ROPAR – Babbar Khalsa militant Jagtar Singh Tara was today acquitted in a case registered against him 24 years ago for attempt to murder and under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and Arms Act.

Tara, who belongs to Dekwala village near Rupnagar, was arrested from Thailand early this year. He is also an accused in former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination case.

A case under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the IPC and Sections 3, 4 and 5 of TADA and Sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act was registered on December 26, 1991, against Tara and other persons at Sadar police station for allegedly firing on police on the Morinda road.

Other accused in case had already been acquitted. After conducting hearing in the case through video conferencing from Burail Jail, a local court today acquitted Tara.
