Canada Post Approves Stamp To Honour 100th Anniversary Of Komagata Maru Tragedy

SURREY – The Komagata Maru Heritage Foundation hosted a Candle Light Vigil on remembrance of the 99th Anniversary of the departure of the Komagata Maru from Vancouver, Canada on July23.1914 and used the opportunity to announce that Canada Post will honour the incident with a stamp.
Community leaders from many organizations were in attendance at the event and a documentary on Komagata Maru was shown before the speakers shared their views. Harbhajan S Gill President of the Komagata Maru Heritage Foundation thanked every one for a great turnout.
He also noted that Stamp approval by Canada Post is a proud moment for the South Asian community. Plans for 100 years are being finalized by many community organizations starting in April 2014 to September 2014.
Sukhi Bath Sewa Club provided refreshments and hospitality. Speakers who spoke at the event included  MP Jinny Sims,  EX MP Sukh Dhalliwal, Charanpal Gill President CEO PICS and many others.
Commemorative Komagata Maru t-shirts were handed out to all participants. Kuldip Ardawa from Surrey Food Bank participated and gave her appreciation to the South Asian community helping out the Food Bank through the summer, as food supplies are needed more the summer.
