Canada’s Governor General Headed To India On A State Visit


OTTAWA – Prime Minister StephenHarper announced Friday that DavidJohnston, Governor General ofCanada, will travel to Indiafrom February 22 to March2, 2014. During his visit,the Governor General willmeet with heads of state,senior government officials,business leaders and civilsociety, with a view tostrengthening bilateral relationsincluding commercialand educational ties.Canada and India have longstandingbilateral relations built on shared valuesof democracy and pluralism, aswell as close cooperation within theCommonwealth and the UnitedNations. In recent years, both countrieshave worked to enhance bilateralrelations in several areas, includingcommerce, security, education, energy,science and technology, culture, andagriculture.Here are some key factors thatIndia Canada shares:•Canada has a vibrant communityof approximately one millionIndo-Canadians.•India is one of the fastestgrowing economies in theworld. Our countries are committedto tripling bilateral tradeto $15 billion annually. To helpachieve this, negotiations for aCanada-India ComprehensiveEconomic Partnership Agreement areunderway.•Prime Minister Harper travelled toIndia for official visits in November2012 and November 2009. Dr.Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister ofIndia, visited Canada in June 2010.
