Congress Wants ‘Real’ Culprits Caught In Bhola Drug Racket


CHANDIGARH -Congress MLAswill soon meetHome MinisterSushilkumar Shindeto seek Centre’sintervention toensure that investigations into the Bhola drugracket in Punjab is not influenced. Leader of theOpposition Sunil Jakhar said the Congress wantedthat “real culprits do not escape the policenet.” He said the government had refused toaddress the issue when raised by All-IndiaCongress Committee vice-president RahulGandhi during his Punjab tour. Jakhar said theracket had exposed the involvement of politicians,powerful businessmen and the statemachinery. “You cannot just blameporous borders for the rise in smuggling,”he added. But Daljit SinghCheema, SAD secretary, dubbed theCongress move as a mere gimmick“aimed at lowering the prestige of theduly elected state government.” He saidthis amounted to inviting CentralGovernment’s direct interference in statematters.” The SAD spokesman said saidit was indeed ironical that instead ofpraising the state police and thankingDeputy Chief Minister Sukhbir SinghBadal, who held the Home portfolio, forbusted the international drug racke, theCongress was resorting to cheap politicson an issue affecting the youth.
