Surrey MP, Jinny Sims, expressed her disappointment in the defeat vote saying, “We must do everything possible to prevent bullying and to protect young people from its devastating effects. We have seen too many young people hurt by bullying to reject ideas that will help to correct the problem.”
SURREY– While bullying is at the forefront of society’s woes with the tragic death of BC teen Amanda Knox – the Stephen Harper Conservative government doesn’t give a damn about bullying.
An NDP motion to create a National Bullying prevention strategy was voted down in the House of Commons by the Conservative majority on November 21st.
Danny Morin, the NDP member who sponsored the motion had been looking for the support of all parties on the matter. The main focus of this committee would have been the examination of strategies to prevent bullying.
Surrey MP, Jinny Sims, expressed her disappointment in the defeat vote saying, “We must do everything possible to prevent bullying and to protect young people from its devastating effects. We have seen too many young people hurt by bullying to reject ideas that will help to correct the problem.”
The effects of bullying, both online and in the day-to-day lives of young people have been in the news in BC and across Canada recently. Says Sims, “Young people and their parents are very concerned about bullying. We need to look at how to prevent bullying, not just how to prosecute offenders after the fact.”
The Bullying Prevention motion was created by Danny Morin, an NDP MP from Quebec, and was supported by all NDP and Liberal MPs. The majority of Conservative MPs voted against the motion, resulting in the defeat of the anti-bullying proposal.
