OTTAWA— Liberal International Trade Critic Wayne Easter accused the Stephen Harper Conservatives of sacrificing Canadian jobs on the U.S Perimeter Security Deal.
“The Conservatives appear to have concluded their $1 billion dollar Perimeter Security Deal – but while the government was supposed to be at the table, there has been unprecedented trade discrimination from south of the border. The Conservatives are getting steam-rolled by the Americans and putting Canadian jobs at risk,” said Easter.
Easter said while the Conservatives were negotiating their secret deal, the Americans have been pushing punishing restrictions on Canada, like Buy American, Country of Origin Labeling and levies on goods flowing from Canada. President Obama publically hinted at upcoming Buy American restrictions but this government was still caught with its pants down. The Americans are even considering building a fence along the Canadian border!
“The Conservatives are either unwilling or unable to stand up for Canada by putting these issues on the table. It is shocking and amateur that they are about to impose a secret deal on Canadians without dealing with serious trade issues that are costing Canadian money and jobs.”
