MISSION – Spinning4Diversity held a Spin-A-Thon, via social media, August 21 through the 22nd at The Fitness Lab in Mission. Over 50 spinners participated for two days contributing their personal stories and experiences in a group setting. Groups were refreshed every hour, all bringing their views on how to combat racism and ways to build our communities together.
One local group that participated was the summer staff from Khalsa Centre at Miracle Valley. During their discussion the group expressed concerns over a recent sign that was affixed to a utility pole in Hatzic Prairie. The underlying tone was of racial intolerance and was very disturbing to local residents and to the youth staff from the camp who felt it may have been directed towards them.
Summer staffer Praneet Singh said: “Personally, I felt kind of bad for them, the fact that someone would put that much of an effort and go out of their way to not include others and hostile in a sense and how uninformed they are.”
“Come up to our camp, come talk to us, meet with us, we’re not that different from you we’re normal people. We contribute to the community just as much as you do. I feel bad for these people and how uninformed they are. I’d like them to see how hospitable and how similar we are. “
The event was a success with many conversations being documented on ways we can build a stronger understanding between people.
There is no room for intolerance and questionable behaviour that leads to divisions. Everyone is and should feel welcomed into our community. I’m pleased that the Khalsa staff expressed their feelings over the recent incident. One common theme we all walked away with is how communication is a vital part in creating a broad insight during times of misunderstanding.
