MUKTSAR- A Dalit youth was allegedly beaten, made to drink urine and his head allegedly tonsured by people from his village after he was caught having a relationship with a Dalit girl from the same vicinity in Malout town, sources in the police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Monday, police sources said.
A video of his head being forcibly shaved after the two were found in what police sources said was a “compromising position” went viral on social media.
Police said they were still investigating the case. The victim is currently at the civil hospital in Malout town, police sources said.
The victim’s cousin said the girl’s family members were among his attackers.
The cousin, who doesn’t want to be identified, said police had intervened to rescue the victim.
“We demand strict action against them (the attackers),” the cousin said.
Inspector Mohan Lal, the station head officer of Malout (City) police station, confirmed the attack.
“We had visited the spot and rescued the boy yesterday. He is admitted to the local Civil Hospital. It appears to be a case of some love affair, but when our team had visited there, some people were thrashing him,” he said.
