OTTAWA – Mike Duffy says former prime minister Stephen Harper conceded the senator had never broken any Senate expense rules, but was adamant that Duffy admit fault to keep Conservative supporters happy.
Duffy is recounting on the witness stand how he made his case directly to Harper, noting how much time he spent on the road trying to build support for the Conservatives.

Duffy says that he repeatedly resisted attempts by Harper’s top aides to have him admit publicly to a mistake and repay his expense claims, because this would forever stain his reputation.
The senator’s reluctance to go along with the so-called mistake-repay scenario is key to his defence against the charge of bribery.
The Crown has argued that Duffy was a participant in a scheme to have Harper’s one time chief of staff Nigel Wright secretly repay the $90,000 in contested expenses.
