SUVA – Fiji Football Association presidential candidate Rajesh Patel said he had not supported the views and tactics of Doctor Shamsud-Dean Sahu Khan, as claimed by some people.

The Fiji FA vice-president said they (him and Dr Sahu Khan) were at loggerhead because of conflicting views during the Board of the Control (BOC) meeting.

Patel said the claims of some people were void and have been stimulated to affect his campaign for the top post.

He claimed the former president wanted to run the system his own way. Patel said when he was frustrated with Sahu Khan’s leadership he expressed his interest to lead Fiji FA and do his best to bring repute to the sport in Fiji.

“If I was with Sahu Khan then why would I have declared my intention to contest for the president’s post two years ago (in 2009),” the Ba businessman said.

“We (Patel and Sahu Khan) used to fight during the BOC meetings because there were things I opposed. But Dr Sahu Khan used to hold major portfolios and we couldn’t do much.”

Patel said he held a sole portfolio as the youth’s (league) director. He said he did his job well and managed to secure a major sponsorship to help boost the development of soccer at grassroots level.

“Our campaign for the election is going well. We have support from all the districts (North, West and South). We are overwhelmed by the support shown by the seven districts in the North,” he said.
