SUVA – Urban dwellers particularly women aged 35 years and above have been found to be the least active segments of the Fijian Population.
That is the finding of the Fiji Physiotherapy Association as they gear up for their Move Fiji Move campaign this weekend.
According to the Fiji National Physical Activity Survey of 2002, women aged above 35 years and Indo Fijians in urban and peri-urban areas were found to be the least active in Fiji.
Project Officer Physical Activity at the National central Health Promotion, Elizabeth Younger said the trend has been noted as many of people nowadays are turning to technology to get the work done.
According the 2002 Survey, 72-74% of the total population in Fiji were physically inactive, adding this is a risk especially since physical inactivity ranks as the fourth highest contributing factor for Non Communicable Diseases.
As part of their Awareness campaign, the Health Ministry and Fiji Physiotherapy Association are organising a program having a zumba, a march and mass scanning around the country this weekend.
