Strength is not always measured in lifting pounds but also in your capacity to help others in need. A local powerlifter has proved this in action. Sumeet Sharma, who has represented Canada at various international powerlifting events, has been an active member of the community helping those in need.

In the latest, he has teamed up with the Red Cross to support the people of Jasper. Utilizing the power of social media, they are rallying the community to donate generously. Every penny collected is a beacon of hope, aiding those impacted by adversity. “Donations to the Canadian Red Cross will be used for assisting those impacted in Jasper and other affected areas in Alberta with immediate and ongoing relief including financial assistance, support to evacuees and the communities hosting them, recovery and resilience efforts in response to the wildfires, as well as supporting community preparedness and risk reduction for future all-hazard disaster events within Alberta,” said Sharma.

Sharma is a star powerlifter, who represented Canada in the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship in Newfoundland in 2019 and walked away with silver in Bench Press.

Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on any of three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. He has been competing in powerlifting since 2016 and has accumulated an impressive resume. In addition to his latest win, he won gold in both 2017 and 2018 at the Western Powerlifting Championships. I was also placed 4th in powerlifting in the country in 2018.

However, Sharma’s strength is just not limited to lifting weights. The COVID-19 pandemic saw our champion and their sponsor, Supplementking, stepping up to support healthcare workers. Together, they provided essential food supplies to hospitals across the lower mainland, accomplishing a mission close to their hearts.

In addition, their philanthropic efforts extended to the global stage. Partnering with the Canada Ukraine Foundation, they set up donation boxes at Supplementking locations in Surrey to raise funds for those affected by the crisis in Ukraine.

The journey of giving doesn’t end there. He is now rallying the community to donate generously for the people of Jaspar.
