The City of Surrey has recently begun construction of various community centres, parks and recreation centres. Recent in the list are Newton Community Centre and a new outdoor sport and cultural venue in North Surrey.
A ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 14 marked the construction of Newton Community Centre. The initial construction of the Newton Community Centre will include a 10-lane 50-metre swimming pool, leisure pool, hot tubs, sauna and steam room, fitness centre, licensed childcare and multi-purpose spaces. A future phase of development is anticipated to include a library, multipurpose gymnasium and culture amenities. The project is also being designed to allow for the integration of additional amenities to meet growing community needs.
The Newton Community Centre will be a sustainable facility designed to the most stringent energy performance standards, such as Net Zero Carbon and Passive House. This inclusive and universally accessible facility will embrace the diverse cultures of Surrey and will be designed to meet the vision and goals of the City’s Sustainability Charter.
This project was approved in the 2021 Five-Year (2021-2025) Capital Financial Plan and is among more than 20 projects included in the ‘Surrey Invests’ Capital Plan. Learn more at surrey.ca/capitalprojects.
The City of Surrey has also begun work on a new outdoor sport and cultural venue in North Surrey, which will be able to host the sport of Kabaddi as well as community events and concerts.
“With its natural grass field, this will be an ideal venue to support the growing sport of Kabaddi in Surrey. It will have the largest seating capacity of all other Kabaddi amenities in the City. Located near SkyTrain and rapid transit, the Complex will also serve as an additional outdoor venue to host a variety of community events helping to make Surrey the vibrant place it is.”
The North Surrey Outdoor Sport Complex will be located adjacent to Scott Road SkyTrain Station and North Surrey Sport and Ice Complex at 12626 110 Avenue. The complex will include a circular natural grass sports field, a 2500-seat grandstand and a fieldhouse which will include public washrooms and changerooms. The complex’s proximity to rapid transit and SkyTrain makes it an ideal location for hosting large tournaments and events.
In addition to having the capacity to host a variety of sport and cultural activities, the North Surrey Outdoor Sport Complex will have larger seating capacity than any other Kabaddi amenity in the City.
The sports facility was approved in the 2021 Five-Year (2021-2025) Capital Financial Plan and is among more than 20 projects included in the ‘Surrey Invests’ Capital Plan. Learn more at surrey.ca/capitalprojects.
