On November 29th, Friday, Surrey Police Service assumed Police of Jurisdiction responsibilities for the City of Surrey and will oversee all operational policing-related duties. SPS organized a press conference on Friday, November 29 th at Surrey Police Service Headquarters for the announcement of the assumption of police of jurisdiction duties for Surrey Police Service.
Surrey Police Service Chief Constable Norm Lipinski was joined by Garry Begg, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, City of Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, and Assistant Commissioner John Brewer, Criminal Operations Officer – Core Policing for the BC RCMP.
Following a traditional welcome and blessing from Chief Chappell on behalf of the Semiahmoo First Nation, the speakers provided brief comments on this historic change in policing in the City of Surrey. There was a heartfelt note sent by Surrey RCMP unit to media outlets. It read, “As we approach the Surrey policing transition at the end of the month, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to you. Although we may not have always been able to meet every deadline and answer every tough question asked, your support has meant the world to us. It has been a true privilege to work with you all. We are all incredibly proud of our work together and we will cherish each of the professional connections we have made. While we are sad to say goodbye, we are also filled with immense appreciation for the trust you have shown us. Thank you for your support and understanding. It has been our greatest honour.”
