Police tape and cars surround the house in Brampton, Ontario where Lakhvir Dhaliwal was killed early Monday morning.

The victim has been identified as Lakhvir Dhaliwal of Brampton, Ontario. Her husband Jatinder Dhaliwal has been charged with second-degree murder.

TORONTO – A young child dialled 911 early Monday morning and told police his mother was hurt.

When they arrived at the two-storey brick home on Sled Dog Rd. in Brampton the woman was dead.

The victim has been identified as Lakhvir Dhaliwal. Her husband Jatinder Dhaliwal has been charged with second-degree murder.

There were obvious signs of trauma to the 37-year-old woman, said Const. Erin Cooper of Peel Regional Police, but officers would not confirm the cause of death.

Two children were in the house at the time, a 9-year-old and an 8-year-old, Cooper said. They were unharmed and have been taken into the care of the Children’s Aid Society, police said.

The victim’s husband, Jatinder Dhaliwal, was arrested in the death, after he was involved in a single-vehicle crash at Torbram Rd. and Peter Robertson Blvd. in Brampton.

According to one neighbour, Jatinder Dhaliwal frequently had male friends in his garage, who were sometimes noisy and stayed late into the night. When the garage door was left open, the men could be seen inside barbecuing or playing darts. Other times, the visitors would go inside the garage and Dhaliwal would close the door, he said.

Neighbours said the family has lived in the house for about four years and this is not the first time police have been called to their home.

Two months ago, police responded to a late-night call, said neighbour Lucky Verma.

About a year ago, police descended on the house with a tactical unit and broke in the front door when no one answered, according to other neighbours.

The home, in a newer subdivision, had small surveillance cameras at the front and back. They were installed shortly after the family moved in, said a neighbour.

The family kept to themselves, although some had children who played with their sons.

Next-door neighbour Sweety Shergill said the residents are nice people with two young boys who often played outside. She was shocked to hear what happened.

“They are nice people,” Shergill said.

Lakhvir Dhaliwal was an attentive mother, and one neighbour said she took the children to karate, soccer and swimming, and always sat on the front porch in the summer watching them play.

That’s where neighbours last saw her at about 6 p.m. Sunday. She sat on the porch while the two boys played in the front yard and driveway, they said.
