Foreign Interference by India in Canada’s Electoral processes has once again become topic of discussion. This time the spotlight was directly on Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre. Media outlet Globe and Mail in an article alleged that India organized support for Poilievre’s successful Tory leadership bid in 2022.
The Globe and Mail reported on that Indian agents and their proxies allegedly interfered in Poilievre’s election to become the Conservative Party leader in 2022. The Globe cited an anonymous source, who it said had top-secret clearance, as saying that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) became aware of Indian agents being involved in raising campaign funds and organizing within the South Asian community for Poilievre during the leadership race.
Poilievre has refuted the claim by saying he won the contest “fair and square.”
Poilievre in response to a question from a reporter about the article quoted a line from the Globe article, which read: “CSIS also did not have evidence that Mr. Poilievre or members of his inner circle were aware of the alleged actions.”
Poilievre also referenced the foreign interference inquiry commission led by Justice Marie-Josée Hogue that heard testimony from CSIS witnesses noting they had no reason to believe the impacted Conservative candidates would have been aware of alleged support from the Indian government.
He quoted from the report, “The commission heard testimony about allegations of the government India interference in the Conservative Party leadership race. CSIS witnesses noted that they had no reason to believe the impacted candidates would have been aware of the alleged support.”
He further said, “Let’s be honest I won the leadership fair and square. Even my political competitors like Mr Patrick Brown have publicly testified under oath that that was the case.”
While responding to a question of a reporter he said, “But I’m glad that the Liberals put this attack out today. Something that’s really been worrying me. After Justin Trudeau named Mark Carney his economic adviser giving him massive power over public policy in Canada, Mr Carney went over for meetings in Beijing where he just had secret talks with the deputy governor of the Chinese Central Bank. Two weeks later Brookfield got a quarter billion dollar loan.
“Why would he be having secret meetings with top bank government-controlled bankers about getting a quarter billion dollar loan while he was supposed to be acting in Canada’s interest as the prime minister’s economic adviser? Why would he be collaborating with a hostile foreign regime that we have since learned executed four Canadians and took numerous Canadians hostage for a lengthy period of time,” he asked.
Poilievre was visiting BC this week. He met with reporters of ethnic media in Surrey at Civic hotel. He took the opportunity to tell the British Columbians that he got into politics to “Bring home Canada” promise which means a country where hard work will get you a beautiful house, you can walk on safe streets.
He blamed Liberal government for rising costs and falling economy which is now under “America’s thumb.” He said the question in this election was whether Liberals deserve a fourth term in power or it is time for change to put a Conservative government that will axe the taxes, build new homes, lock up criminals, reduce red tape, secure borders, rearm the military and rebuild the economy to stand up to American Trump.
He said he strongly condemns President Trump’s latest tariffs. He said it was time to reverse all Liberal policies to rebuild economy. “Vancouver is the second most expensive housing market in North America and third most expensive in Europe due to Liberals costly policies.”
He answered questions on immigration, housing affordability, international credentials and his approach towards dealing with international terror.
