India’s Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar Slapped Over Steep Price Rise


NEW DELHI – A youth identified as Harvinder Singh on Thursday attacked agriculture minister Sharad Pawar at the NDMC centre in New Delhi. Singh slapped Pawar as he was walking after talking to reporters.

The attacker later said that he had attacked him for sharp rise of food prices in the country and he had no regret for his action. According to media reports, Harvinder Singh is a tempo driver by profession. The security personnel arrested him after the attack. “The people are fed up of corruption and price rise,” the man shouted after attacking Pawar.

Pawar lost his balance but remained unperturbed after the assault and moved towards the exit of the auditorium and got into his waiting car. Private security guards immediately overpowered the youth who was shouting “he is corrupt” and an official landed some blows on Singh.

“I came planned to the event to slap the minister,” Singh told reporters who had gone to cover the literary function.

“All of them are corrupt,” he shouted when he was removed from security and policemen.

Wielding a small kirpan, the youth said things could have been worse but for the observance of martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Later, Pawar reacted to the incident calling it stupid and that he did not make much out of it.

When asked whether he would press charges against the attacker, he said it was for police to deal with the matter. Pawar said he saw the youth standing in the midst of a group of journalists and could have taken advantage of the fact that he has very little security.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and many others have condemned the attack. The Prime Minister also talked to Pawar after the incident. Condemning the attack, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav said he does not support any vilence.

BJP leader Smriti Irani has also said that attack on politicians will not be tolerated. Recently, same Harvinder Singh had attacked former telecom minister Sukhram in the Rohini courts complex minutes after the special CBI Judge ordered his arrest to serve a five-year jail term in a corruption case.
