Sixty-three-year-old Rajan Deedar Gill of Vancouver has been identified by Nicaraguan media as the victim of a home invasion murder. Gill was struck on the head with an unidentified object and killed, while a 24-year-old woman, with whom he was reportedly in a relationship, was left alive.
VANCOUVER – A 63-year-old Indo-Canadian man from Vancouver was killed this week in an apparent home invasion robbery at his property in Nicaragua, local media are reporting.
According to Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa, intruders burst into Rajan Deedar Gill’s home in Diriamba in the early morning hours Monday.
Gill was struck on the head with an unidentified object and killed, while a 24-year-old woman, with whom he was reportedly in a relationship, was left alive.
Both had been gagged by the robbers, La Prensa reported.
A Foreign Affairs spokeswoman confirmed a Canadian citizen died abroad, but would not reveal any other details, citing privacy concerns.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends,” Diana Khaddaj said. “Canadian Consular Officials are in contact with local authorities on this matter and are providing consular assistance to the family.”
Gill rented his Nicaraguan home through the Vacation Rentals by Owner website. According to his listing, he worked in international development for two decades in Serbia, Georgia, Afghanistna, Ethiopia and elsewhere, reported CTV News.
In a section explaining why he chose to split his time between Vancouver and the beachside Nicaraguan property, Gill wrote that he “Loved being on the ocean having grown up on the west coast…and it’s warm and the people kind and friendly.”
The woman he was with and a security guard were taken in for police questioning, according to La Prensa.
Witnesses told the paper that Gill’s truck was missing from the property, and presumably stolen.
