SARNIA — What was initially thought to be a tragedy and a rescue story on the side of the Ontario highway when a transport truck cab engulfed in flames, with one occupant able to escape but the other trapped inside and emergency workers unable to help, has turned out to be murder.

Sukhchain Singh Brar, a well known Kabaddi tournament commentator and well known in the Punjabi community in Brampton, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Gurpreet K. Brar, whose body police say was found in the burned cab.

But on Wednesday, the burned-out wreckage of the Freightliner suddenly became the focal point of a homicide investigation, with the OPP charging a Brampton man with killing his wife.

According to sources, police has also recovered a letter written by Gurpreet K. Brar in which she stated she feared for her life. She is survived by the couple’s three kids.

What remains is the mystery of what happened before the big rig wound up at the side of one of Ontario’s busiest highways, Hwy. 402 east of Sarnia, its cab so badly burned it was all but obliterated, reported Toronto Sun newspaper.

Tight-lipped OPP confirmed the spousal relationship between the two people at the centre of the investigation.

Brar, 50, appeared in Sarnia court Thursday charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 37-year-old wife. But while Police wouldn’t confirm whether the Brars are the same couple seen in a photo posted on a news site of many Punjabi newspapers in Canada and all over Facebook, it is confirmed that is them in the photos.

Sukhchain Singh Brar is mentioned in the many Punjabi newspaper posts as an acclaimed commentator for kabaddi, a contact sport that originated in India.

The transport company listed on the trailer couldn’t be reached for comment.

Officers were called to the scene on the westbound 402 at the Camlachie Road overpass, just east of Sarnia, around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 31.

The body of 37 year old Gurpreet K. Brar from Brampton was discovered in the burnt vehicle. The victim was sent to the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Services in Toronto for further examination.

Members of Lambton OPP and the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch continued to investigate the circumstances pertaining to the fire and subsequent death.

On Wednesday, OPP announced they have charged Sukhchain Singh Brar, also from Brampton, with first degree murder. First-degree murder is defined as an unlawful killing that is both willful and premeditated, meaning that it was committed after planning or “lying in wait” for the victim.
