Vancouver: The formal apology on behalf of Canada for the Komagata Maru incident of 1914 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Parliament marked the closure of an unfortunate chapter in the country’s history.
The historic event was followed up and celebrated at the Komagata Maru monument site in Vancouver with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque from the Sites and Monuments Board of Canada last weekend.
The plaque was issued to recognize the historical significance of the 1914 incident.
On hand to unveil the plaque was Minister of National Defence Harjit Singh Sajjan. Descendants of the Komagata Maru families were present during the ceremony.
Raj Toor, spokesperson for the Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society, thanked the Government of Canada and Prime Minister Trudeau for recognizing the Komagata Maru incident as being one of national historical significance.
