PATIALA – A man and his paramour allegedly ended their life in what appeared to be a suicide pact at Shahpur village in Samana this morning. Both reportedly drank some poisonous substance.

Shocked by the incident, the 16-year-old son of the woman too drank poison, but he was saved by the timely intervention of the police and fellow villagers.

The deceased have been identified as Kaurhi Kaur (42), a farm hand, and Surjit Singh (31). Both were married. The woman is survived by a son and two daughters. Her elder daughter is married. Surjit was the father of a son and a daughter. The woman’s husband is a helper with a local farmer, while Surjit Singh’s wife is a housewife. She was unaware of her husband’s extra-marital affair.

Preliminary investigations revealed that both were in a relationship for over five years. The villagers had warned them on several occasions. Perturbed over the objections, Kaurhi and Surjit went to the motor of a landlord in the village and allegedly consumed poison. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

“The bodies were recovered in the morning when the landlord went to the motor. The woman’s son consumed some poisonous substance on hearing about the incident. He was rushed to Government Rajindra Hospital where his condition is stable,” said Ghagga SHO Surinder Pal.

“Following no accusations or foul play, we have registered a case under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” the Station House Officer said.

This is the second incident of suicide in Patiala district in two days. On Sunday night, truck driver Didar Singh had taken the extreme step after stabbing his wife and seven-year-old stepson to death at Nalas Kalan village in Rajpura.
