Mark Carney’s Liberals Clinch 168 Seats to Form Minority Government; Poilievre and Singh Suffer Defeats in Home Ridings

Canadian voters turned out to be the winners in 2025 Federal election, throwing surprises, shocks and sending a message that no single party ruled the hearts of Canadians. Liberal party’s comeback in the political scene was a surprise after Carney became the Liberal leader.

The Liberal Party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, secured a minority government with 168 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons—just shy of the 172 needed for a majority . This outcome marks a significant political comeback for the Liberals, who had been trailing in polls earlier in the year

The popularity of Conservative party went down, sitting comfortably in polls just a few months before. The Conservative party won 144 seats across Canada. Most shocking was the downfall of Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the CPC. He lost his seat in Carleton in Ottawa, which he has represented for nearly two decades.

New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Jagmeet Singh, performed as was predicted in the polls. The party managed to win only 7 seats, with Singh losing his Burnaby Central seat to Liberal candidate Wade Chang. He said he will step down once an interim leader is appointed. The party has also lost its official status, failing to secure the 12 seats necessary.

Carney on the other hand emerged as single most popular leader of the parties running in election. “Thank you, Canada. Our strength lies in our resolve to work together. United, we will build Canada strong,” he said.

The Liberals may fall short of the 172 required for a majority in the House of Commons.

The most likely scenario if this happens is that they form a minority government with Carney as prime minister, where they strike deals with the other parties to survive no-confidence votes and pass legislation in Parliament.

The Bloc Québécois and the NDP could play a role here, as they can help the Liberals pass their legislation.

The Conservatives are on track to once again form the Official Opposition.
