Miss India New York 2011 Crowned


QUEENS – As the glittering pageant at the Community Center Auditorium reached its climatic moment, 23-year-old Chandan Kaur of Queens was crowned Maaza Miss India New York 2011 while the title of Miss Teen India New York went to 16-year-old Sumeet Bhinder of upstate New York.

Kaur, who holds a bachelors degree in business administration, is pursuing her masters in the same field. The Indian American beauty’s hobbies include painting, traveling and cooking.

The first runner-up position in the Maaza Miss India pageant, organized by IFC, went to 19-year-old Noopoor Akruwala of Long Island, with 20-year-old Raishma Mohan-Ram of Queens as the second runner-up. The remaining finalists in the top five were Priyanka Gianchandani and Saloni Jain.

In the Miss Teen India New York pageant, the first runner-up was Monica Walia and the second runner-up was Karishma Malhotra, both from Long Island.

Kaur and Bhinder will now go on to represent New York in the 30th Miss India USA pageant to be held on Nov. 20 at Royal Albert’s Palace in Fords, New Jersey.  The winner of the Miss India USA will compete in the 21st Miss India Worldwide to be held Feb. 25 in Suriname.

Other titles won included: Shabana Singh was named Miss Beautiful Smile; Priyanka Gianchandani, Miss Beautiful Eyes; Chandan Kaur, Miss Photogenic; Noopoor Akruwala, Miss Bollywood Diva, and Raishma Mohan-Ram, Best Talent.
