ABBOTSFORD – An Indo-Canadian man from Abbotsford who was charged with killing Red Scorpion gang leader Matt Campbell in January 2014 has been set free.

Jimi Sandhu was charged with second-degree murder a year ago but the charges were suddenly stayed by Crown prosecutors on Jan. 29.

Crown spokesman Neil MacKenzie told the Vancouver Sun Monday that there was a change in the evidence available to prosecutors that led to the decision to stay the charge.

“Since the time that charges were approved in the case there have been changes in the evidence that is available to Crown, but at this time I can’t be more specific with respect to the nature or details of changes in available evidence,” MacKenzie said.

IHIT was the lead agency on the murder investigation and worked with the Abbotsford Police Department. According to police officials, charges that are stayed can be reinstated if there is new evidence in the investigation.

Sandhu, 25, was accused of stabbing Campbell in the neck after a chance encounter at the Abbotsford Auto Mall on Jan. 2, 2014, the Vancouver Sun reported.

Sandhu was known to police prior to the Campbell murder. He had been convicted of two counts of assault with a weapon – one in Vancouver and one in Abbotsford in May 2012 and got a day in jail and credit for 31 days served.

He was acquitted of trafficking in Abbotsford in 2009 but has other convictions for theft under $5,000 and breach of probation.

In 2011, he and several others were charged in a kidnapping, but the charges were stayed days later, the Vancouver Sun reported.
