OTTAWA – In light of recent rise of anti-Asian hate in the US including killings of Asian women by a deranged, racist American shooter in Atlanta , NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh called for action to stop anti-Asian racism.

“In the wake of the horrific mass shootings in Atlanta, which took the lives of six Asian-Americans and eight people all together, Canadians are reminded of the racism and hate crimes that happen here in Canada against Asian Canadians, Indigenous people and racialized people,” Singh said.

“Many parts of Canada saw a rise in anti-Asian racism in the last year — we recommit to take action to combat it. Discrimination, racism and violence have no place in our communities.”

Recently all political parties adopted the NDP’s motion calling on the Liberal government to take action to tackle hate crimes including by:

*Hosting a federal-provincial-territorial meeting to discuss the rise in hate crimes in Canada and to coordinate our collective efforts and identify best practices to countering this trend;

*Creating and properly funding dedicated hate crime units in every community in Canada;

*Establishing national standards for identifying and recording all hate incidents and their dispensation in the justice system; and

*Working in collaboration with non-profits to facilitate the reporting of hate crimes.

Canadians are tired of symbolic gestures. They want action to combat racism and hate now. They want to see their government take concrete action today to save lives and keep people safe.”
