Sangrur: Members of the Scientific Awareness and Social Welfare Forum, a local NGO, today called upon the panchayats to pass resolutions in large numbers by September 30 against opening of liquor vends in their villages during 2017-18.

President of the NGO AS Mann and his team members have been working against the opening of liquor vends in villages of Sangrur district for the past several years under “Make Punjab liquor-free” drive.

Dr Mann said they would soon approach sarpanches and panches to motivate them to pass such resolutions to make their villages liquor-free for the welfare of the coming generations.

He said Sangrur was the only district in the state that took lead every year in passing maximum numbers of resolutions against the opening of liquor vends.

He said the panchayats should come forward to compel the political parties to adopt a “liquor-free Punjab” agenda.

He said with the help of politicians, the villagers could get the liquor vends closed in their respective villages.

He also urged the people to come forward to force the panchayats to pass such resolutions.

As many as 59 panchayats in Sangrur district had passed resolutions against liquor vends in 2015.

Fifty panchayats passed resolutions in 2014 and 79 in 2013.
