SUVA – Parents of Bucalevu Secondary School students are urging authorities to investigate and eradicate ill-conditioned buses for the safety of the public on Taveuni.

Some parents, particularly those from the school, demanded an explanation on why faulty buses were still being allowed to provide services, risking peoples’ lives.

The comments came after a school bus crashed into the Lovonivonu community hall on Tuesday afternoon leaving one dead, two in a critical condition in the hospital and injuring other students.

Police said the driver lost control of the bus while driving down the hill from the school.

Parents of Aashna Singh, the Form Seven student who died as a result, were still in a state of shock when this newspaper contacted them yesterday.

Rup Singh of Waibula in Dala said he received a phone call around 4pm on the day where he learnt of the accident.

His family lives about 20 miles away from Taveuni Hospital and they hoped to see their daughter alive but instead were informed of their daughter’s death.

Aashna is the second eldest of four siblings. Her first cousin Binesh Chand who is also the Dala district councillor said: “This is a sad day because we have lost a young life because of negligence.”

Another parent said she feared for her children’s life when she heard of the incident but was relieved when she learnt her children missed the bus.
