SUVA – Police  have arrested and questioned a farmer in Vanua Levu accused of raping his 14-year-old mentally challenged daughter this week.

Police spokeswoman Theresa Ralogaivau said the girl had told some people that she was raped. The 58-year-old man was reported to police by a farm manager.

Ralogaivau said police continued to hold awareness programs in the community, visiting schools, villages and church groups to raise awareness on sex crimes.

“We are intensively carrying out awareness on the issue in the Northern Division with communities visited every day,” Ralogaivau said.

“Now that schools have reopened, our visit has started again with students and as a result, we find more people reporting sexual-related crimes now. We will continue to sustain momentum of awareness campaigns,” she said.

Police teams attended church services and talked to people about the importance of fighting sex-related cases. In Labasa, a team of officers visited and attended church services in Naseakula and Wailevu.

The team also visited the Assemblies of God church in Naodamu.
