Police Urge Road Users to Slow Down and Stay Alert Amid Rising Fatal Accidents in BC

Summers are here and so are the more vehicles. This week witnessed so many fatal and tragic vehicle accidents on BC reads.

In Surrey, police was investigating single motor vehicle collision where one person died. The accident happened on July 11. Police arrived at scene to find a woman in her early 20’s who had been ejected from the vehicle and was deceased.  Two other occupants were located trapped in the vehicle and later taken to hospital for further assessment.  Driver of the vehicle is a 23-year-old man and passenger is a 22-year-old man.

 Surrey RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team has taken conduct of the investigation and being assisted by Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.  Preliminary investigation indicates speed may have been a factor.

Another accident was on Highway 3 near Becks Road in Keremeos, BC where an extended family of 4 died in a serious collision involving two cars and a tractor trailer.

Sadly, four adults of an extended family, all from the same vehicle, were found deceased on scene. The occupants of the other vehicles were uninjured.

“This is a terrible tragedy. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen RCMP spokesperson Sgt Jason Bayda said. “Our thoughts are also with the first responders and members of the public impacted by this incident.”

Another one was on July 9, 2024 when Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a report of a single vehicle motor vehicle collision on Westside Road, near Panorama Drive, in Wilmer, BC.

Upon arrival, first responders located a vehicle which had driven off the highway, and down an embankment. “The driver was taken to hospital with what’s believed to be serious, non-life-threatening injuries, while three passengers were sadly pronounced deceased,” confirmed Cpl. James Grandy, BC RCMP spokesperson. “Speed, along with intoxication, are both believed to be a contributing factor.” The collision knocked out power lines, which led to a power interruption to the community.

Ridge Meadows RCMP was also investigating a fatal motor vehicle incident that occurred on Wednesday July 10 evening on Golden Ears Way near Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows. The police informed that the driver of a motorcycle who had sustained severe injuries to their head and body.

Despite life-saving measures provided by BC EHS, the driver of the motorcycle, a 70-year-old male from Langley, was pronounced dead on scene at approximately 7 p.m.

Initial reports and eyewitness accounts indicate that the motorcyclist was travelling northbound on Golden Ears Way approaching the overpass above Lougheed Highway before losing control of the vehicle, colliding with the centre median, and being ejected of the motorcycle.
