CHANDIGARH – Kamal Sharma was unanimously elected president of the BJP state unit here. Sharma, who is adviser to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, enjoys a rapport with the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

A senior leader from Ferozepur, Sharma has been active in the Sangh affairs for the past three decades. He was in the race for the top post last time too. There was a feeling that Ashwani Kumar might manage another extension because of his ‘commendable’ handling of organisational affairs and his work during the last assembly elections.

The party has, finally, decided to hand over the reigns to Sharma who is known for his organisational skills and for carrying along the party cadre. Ram Nath Kovind, central election observer, and Vinod Sharma, state observer, declared the outcome. Shanta Kumar, national vice-president, and JP Nadda, national general Secretary, were also present on the occasion.
