Sahabhāva is a Sanskrit word for coexistence, community, and coming together. Originally a virtual festival which was one of the first Indian classical music and dance events to occur globally during COVID-19, the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV) continues the concept live with the same intention – to support artists in our community and experience a breadth of artistic disciplines.

This year’s Sahabhāva boasts a diverse range of dance and musical traditions from the subcontinent, brought alive here in Vancouver.

The evening will unfold with a Kathak recital by Palak Dhiman, followed by an exploration of Khayal and Thumri by Hindustani vocalist Shoumi Roy along with Hriday Buddhdev (Tabla) and Akhil Jobanputra (Harmonium).

Palak Dhiman is a dance artist trained in the art of Kathak since 1993, both in India and Canada. She has participated in numerous stage productions, including with Manohar Performing Arts in Winnipeg (2006-2019) and Upasana in Ottawa (2016-2019), and toured across Canada with Usha Dance Ensemble in 2022.
Hriday is a 3rd year Computer Science student at UBC. He started learning Tabla at the age of 4, and Sarod at the age of 9 with several local teachers. Hriday is currently taking Tabla taleem in the Lucknow Gharana from Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri at Ali Akbar College of Music (AACM), and Sarod taleem from Ustad Alam Khan, the son of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
The second half commences with a Katha-Kirtana (devotional storytelling) recital by Sharvari Somayaji (Carnatic vocals), Shriram Rajagopalan (Violin), and Keerthy Raghavan (Mridangam).

To conclude, Dwaipayan Roy (Sarod) will present a medley of ragas with Hriday Buddhdev (Tabla). Entry is by scaled contribution levels starting at $20 – giving you access to the entire evening!

Proceeds will go towards our artists and sustaining the organization’s future endeavours, so whatever you are able to contribute is much appreciated.
