Sexual Abuse Cases Also On The Rise In Fiji

Child abuse cases are also on the rise with a total of 132 cases reported from January to May this year.  This includes sexual abuse, physical abuse, drug abuse and neglect.

SUVA -Eighty percent of women in Fiji have been victims of some sort of violence.

According to 2011 statistics compiled by the Fiji Women Crisis Center, sixty six percent of this is physical violence while the remaining number consists of emotional and physiological violence.

Out of all the reported cases more than ninety percent of the cases involved perpetrators known to the victims.

Meanwhile child abuse cases are also on the rise with a total of 132 cases reported from January to May this year.

This includes sexual abuse, physical abuse, drug abuse and neglect.

A week long program is underway in schools around Fiji by National Substance Abuse Advisory Council to come out strongly on ‘drug abuse’ and ‘violence against girls and women’.

Sexual abuse cases are also on the rise in Fiji this year compared to the same period last year according to statistics from the Department of Social Welfare.

In 2011 from January to June, 56 cases of sexual abuse cases were reported, however for this year, from January to May, the cases have increased to 68.
