RICHMOND— Human and civil rights lawyer Amandeep Singh Chandi has been acclaimed as a candidate in the riding of Richmond-Queensborough.

The Sikh-Canadian legal-beagle grew up in Hong Kong and he now practises law in the lower mainland, including working with the Aboriginal community.

At a press meet to announce his candidacy, along with party leader John Horgan, Chandi said he’s running to defeat Christy Clark and the BC Liberals because they have been in power too long and have become arrogant and irresponsible.

“Christy Clark isn’t working for people,” said Singh, at an event announcing his intention to seek the nomination on Wednesday. “Every day people are paying more and getting less. I am proud to put myself forward to help defeat Christy Clark and form a government that works for everyone.”

“Aman Singh has what it takes to build a better BC,” said BC NDP Leader John Horgan.  “He has the leadership experience and community connections needed to stand up to Christy Clark.  We’re excited he wants to be a part of the BC NDP team in Richmond.”

A recovered alcoholic by his own admission, Chandi said he understand issues of addiction and the current Fentenyl crisis that is killing hundreds in BC – more than 900 people dead.

The riding has been restructured where it now borders Richmond and the Queenborough area of New Westminster.

The NDP thinks Chandi has a very good chance of becoming the next MLA in the riding.

Jack Trovato, local teacher and former federal NDP candidate, is one of those who believes the riding will go NDP in the next election. Trovato is supporting Singh’s bid for Richmond—Queensborough.

“Aman will be a strong voice for Richmond in a BC NDP government.  I’m proud to be standing with him,” he said.

Chandi is up against another newcomer and lightweight BC Liberal candidate in former broadcaster-turned Christy Clark’s LNG pitchman Jas Johal.

Let the dog fight begin!

Born in India and raised in Hong Kong before making Richmond his home with his family, Chandi speaks English, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Cantonese; an asset in his work representing clients at home and around the world.

He has worked for people seeking political asylum at Canadian tribunals and has been an advisor to First Nations leaders. As a small business owner, he understands that you don’t need to choose between economic prosperity and social responsibility.
