Jeyrasan Manikarajah, who worked in a restaurant, was found bleeding to death in an alleyway in Cote-des-Neiges on Monday evening. Amalan Thandapanithosigar is suspected of murdering a 40-year-old father of three.

MONTREAL – A 34-year-old Sri-Lankan man was charged Wednesday with the first-degree murder of Jeyrasan Manikarajah, after a stabbing in Cote-des-Neiges Monday evening.

Amalan Thandapanithosigar is suspected of murdering a 40-year-old father of three, reported CTV Montreal+.

Thandapanithesigar used a Tamil to French interpreter in court to better understand the proceedings. He was ordered not to communicate with several family members of the victim including his wife and his children.

He will return to court July 18.

Thandapanithosigar was arrested soon after the attack, and the victim’s son, Abisath, told CTV that the suspect and his father were from the same village in Sri Lanka.

Police initially suspected that Manikarajah and the suspect were involved in some sort of lover’s triangle but later determined that there were other motives for the attack, however police have yet to say what led to the deadly dispute.

“Following the footwork and the interviews of witnesses and the interview of the suspect by homicide investigators, that hypothesis has been ruled out and set aside. The basis of the homicide is now being determined as a conflict between the two individuals,” said Montreal police Const. Francois Collard.

Neighbours said the Thandapanithosigar, who lives in a building next door to the victim, is a quiet man with a young daughter.

Police said witnesses have been helpful to the investigation.

“Everyone was very cooperative in the investigation, which led investigators to the suspect and today’s arraignment of the suspect in court,” said Collard.
