SURREY – A Sikh truck driver from Saskatchewan was roughed up in Surrey after a fender bender and now police are consider charges against the man who assaulted the truck driver and knocked the turban off his head in Surrey
Surveillance video shared on social media shows the other man approaching Jagdeep Singh, striking him in the head causing his turban to fall off.
Singh is from Saskatchewan and was driving his semi near the area of 128 Street and 80th Avenue, when he was involved in a fender bender. He says he got out of his truck to exchange insurance information with the driver of the other vehicle, reported News 1130.
“I came off the truck, he pushed me, he also threw a cigarette and he said too many bad names and bad things to me,” Singh says, adding he was relieved the truck broke his fall.
“He pushed me with very strong hands.”
After people in the area stepped in and called 911, Singh says police arrived and spoke to him.
“The officer came and told us, the guy apologized so what do you want. I said I’m living in Saskatchewan, but I want justice,” Singh says, adding police told him he would have to return to B.C. if the case proceeds to court.
As usual, some in the Punjabi media tried to wrongly blame the RCMP for trying to persuade the driver to not press charges but that was not the case as Mounties responded with an update on the investigation after the video was shared.
“Our officers immediately detained the suspect, took statements, and did a video/canvas. A report to Crown Counsel is being prepared for the BC Prosecution Service, who is responsible for laying charges here in B.C.,” the Surrey RCMP wrote on Twitter.
