SURREY – A batch of bad gasoline, gasoline mixed with either water or diesel, caused a tankful of trouble for several Surrey motorists when their cars stalled.

Four vehicles stalled within metres as the drivers pulled away from the pumps of a gas station in Surrey on Tuesday afternoon.

The station manager said a new company had just refilled the station’s underground tanks when the breakdowns began.

Rana Khalik told Canadian Press the pumps were immediately shut down when water was found in the gas.

He saidthe gas station, which has Mohawk sign on site but is now an independent station, will pay the towing and repair bills for the stricken cars.

He also says the station will remain closed while its gasoline holding tanks are flushed.

A woman named Melissa was one of the several people affected. She made it about 30 metres before the vehicle started to lurch and stalled. Puzzled, she looked around and saw four other vehicles that had gassed up at the same station, all stalled in the same block, the Surrey Leader reported.

Khaliq told the Surrey leader that it’s his understanding that diesel mistakenly got mixed with regular gas.

He believes the tanker that delivered the fuel neglected to wash out the diesel from a previous load and subsequently mixed the two types, fouling the systems in the vehicles that gassed up.

He said the problem was identified quickly and the tanker company immediately took responsibility, covering the cost of vehicle repairs.
