NADI – Three people died instantly and two are in serious condition at the Nadi Hospital after a head-on road collision involving a truck and a twin-cab vehicle at Sabeto, Nadi.
They were the country’s first road fatalities this year compared to five for the same period last year.
Shaemal Chandra, who lives next to the Sabeto stretch of the Queens Road, said he was having lunch with his family when he heard a loud noise close to his home.
He said as he stepped out of the house he heard people crying and shouting and was shocked to see a twin-cab vehicle in the cane field while the truck was parked by the side of the road.
“Once I move closer to the twin-cab vehicle, I saw three passengers unconscious in the vehicle with blood covering their bodies,” Chandra said.
“The roof of the twin-cab was ripped off by the impact. It was located a few metres from the vehicle. I then opened the door and all of a sudden one of the passengers fell, he then stood and fell again.
“I noticed that two of the five passengers were still alive while the rest, I believe, died instantly.” Chandra said he then called the police who arrived minutes later.
