ABBOTSFORD – World class wrestler Jagroop Singh Bhullar, the cousin of Commonwealth Gold medalist Arjan Bhullar, has become an officer with the Abbotsford police department. He was sworn in last week at a ceremony in Abbotsford.

Before becoming a police officer, Jagroop Bhullar was working in the criminal justice system as a Corrections Officer at the Surrey Pretrial Service Center (SPSC).

He said he is excited to pursue his career goal of becoming a police officer for the Abbotsford Police Department.

“I am a team player who takes initiative and as my family has taught me to be honest, show integrity, and always be trustworthy,” he said.

Bhullar, who was born on September 20th 1985 in Vancouver, British Columbia, is part of the Bhullar wrestling clan, having followed in the footsteps of his legendary uncle Tara Singh Bhullar (Tara Pehlwan).

Bhullar began wrestling at a very young age, and eventually built a rigorous daily training regime; which quickly became a way of life. He says he was never a born athlete; he never really fit the criteria of a natural athlete, let alone the criteria of a wrestler.

“My dad spent a lot of time with me, playing the role of his mentor as well as his best friend. He always believed that I had the ability to become successful at whatever it was that he wanted to do in life; and led impressively by example. It was the life experience, and love, that was larger than any formal education that my dad gave me, which led to the development of a belief in myself that has only multiplied,” Jagroop Bhullar said.

He did his formal studies at SFU, where he was a top wrestler and eventually became CIS National Champion and lead the university team as team captain to a national title. He continued to excel to many top-level competitions wrestling for SFU, while maintaining a high grade point average. He went on to graduate with a Major in Criminology and Minor in Education.

SFU was also where Jag met his wife, Sonia and he said his wife continues to play a major role his  motivation and encouragement, by supporting his goals and dreams related to athletics, academics, and career. By profession she is a Registered Dental Hygienist and is currently completing her Undergraduate Degree at SFU, with a Major in Psychology and a Minor in Education.

With the help of his family, friends and the generosity of his community, he continues to give back in any shape or form that he can. He has opened up his own non-profit athletic club, Bhullar Wrestling Club, which operates out of Richmond for free to the public. This is a volunteer service, which he has started to give back to the community, and it is at full capacity (35 students) and growing.
