Vancouver’s Dance Centre begins new season with focus on Classical Indian Dance

The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! series begins a new season with Classical Indian Dances in Focus. This is an opportunity to experience two beautiful and contrasting styles of classical Indian dance, famed for their intricate movements, percussive rhythms and rich storytelling. Kathak artist Fiana Kawane, Bharata Natyam dancer Shilpa Shankar, and special guests illustrate the range, complexity and musicality of these constantly evolving art forms. There will be a post-show artist talkback.

The Dance Centre presents Classical Indian Dances in Focus on Thursday September 28, 2023 at 12 noon at Scotiabank Dance Centre, 677 Davie St, Vancouver. Fiana Kawane is a dance artist and choreographer trained in Kathak, a north Indian classical dance form known for its pirouettes, lyrical movements, and footwork. She trained over more than a decade with Kadamb, an institute founded and directed by Kumudini Lakhia, in India. Fiana has performed independently and with dance companies across India, Pakistan, Canada, Japan, and France.
 
Shilpa Shankar is a Bharata Natyam dance artist. Originally from India, where she received initial training in the dance form under Nirupama Rajendra of Abinava Dance Company, she currently receives advanced training in Bharata Natyam at Mandala Arts and Culture and has been under the mentorship and guidance of Artistic Director Jai Govinda for the past 4 years. Shilpa is also a Certified Public Accountant, and serves as Treasurer on the board of Company 605.
